I was thinking in terms of economic impact. The town in western MA that I grew up in back in the 50s/60s made lots of that stuff. GTD, Millers Falls Tools, etc. Paid good wages and allowed a pretty decent middle class life. All gone, apparently heroin is the big product there now. The town is basically dead.
But, yes... a big disaster, maybe even a severe storm, would wreak havoc. I doubt the US could easily ramp up in a hurry as it did back at the on-set of WW2.
