The former Eagle Mountain interchange with UP has been pretty well wiped out by UP improvements. Google: [www.google.com]. Several significant washouts have affected the line, too; follow it in Google satellite view to get an idea. Getting it back in service would be a significant job. Given UP's dislike of short-distance jobs, I wonder if long-haul trucks would be a more likely carrier to someplace in the desert.

Eagle Mountain has competition as a potential landfill site: several open-pit gold mines will be looking for reclamation in the next 10 or so years, for instance, which would have to be accessed by truck. And Eagle Mountain is in a carve-out on the east side of Joshua Tree NP [www.google.com] which would certainly bring out the preservation crowd should major activity of any kind threaten to resume there.
