Rode on meter-gauge U6Bs in Vietnam in 1970. One interesting feature of the ones in Vietnam was that they had sliding shutters inside the cab of half-inch steel plate to cover the side windows during an attack.
Rolling stock on passenger trains at that time consisted of French-built wood-sided coaches.
Work trains still used steam locomotives.
Also, while stationed in Da Nang, saw a new U6B being delivered on the deck of a small Navy ship that had made its way up the river into Da Nang.
At the time I was there, the rail line between Da Nang and Hue was relatively safe during the day, though bridges sometimes got blown up at night.
