Re: Name that GE.
A number of the original U8b's supplied to South Vietnam are alive and well after more than 50 years service, now under the national rail carrier Vietnam National Railways (DSVN).
Some 47 metre gauge locomotives were supplied in 3 batches starting in 1963, the money coming from a US assistance package.
Some 200 pieces of freight rolling stock were also supplied, mainly metre gauge boxcars, many also still in use.
They were initially classified as BB-907 class (907-954) and are now classified as D9E class with road numbers 207 to 254).
They are mainly used for switching and short freight etc and live mainly in the south operating out of Saigon (Ho Chi Minh City).
As is the case with lots of things in Vietnam it's difficult to find out exactly how many are still operating, though only one is officially written off.
