It was probably an LST (Landing Ship Tank). They were designed with flat bottoms so they could pull up on the beach, open the bow doors and disgorge their cargo. Then they could back off under their own power or winch themselves back into deep water. Seems like they would work in a river as well. But, what do I know? I flew airplanes.
