Question About Sleeping Cars

When did Amtrak begin positioning sleeping cars at the front of the train, specifically the Starlight? Traditionally (i.e. pre-Amtrak) sleeping cars were to the rear of the train, although I think SP ran sleepers at the front of the Lark during its waning days; likewise on the Sunset as well.

What is the thinking for positioning sleepers up front? Service issues? Or is it due to the need to add or drop coaches from a consist more easily to accommodate demand?
