I just returned from a trip to New Mexico via AMTRAK with sleeping accomodations. The sleeping car was toward the east at the front end of the train on the way east, and at the end of the train west bound.
BNSF tracks are rougher than hell from L.A. to Lamy, NM; but UP's rail L.A. to Sacramento via the coast was in good shape.
All in-all, a great trip! :)
