It s obvious except for one person that those folks with comments regarding my initial thread dot not live in Novato and are completely unaware of the NWP and the mIlling compaines in Novato and Petaluma. The farmers and growers in both counties historically received these commodities by rail at Dariymans and Hunt and Berhens which then trucked the feed and grain out to the customers. Only one move from rain to truck. The savings is the lower cost of the shipment by railroad, and the economies of buying in bulk. Both companies have huge silos to store the product. Without the direct service into Novato and Petaluma on the NWP the feed and grain is off loaded onto trucks in the Valley and shipped to the North Bay. Its the high cost of trucking the extra distance that has resulted in much higher costs because of the increase in fuel costs. Geez, I hope I make myself clear on this, its not rocket science.
