The KM Diesel - hydraulics used what were basically an over - grown automatic transmission for each truck, with cardan shafts going to a main gearbox above the truck, then shorter cardan shafts to gearboxes on each axle. They did not use hydraulic pumps and high pressure hoses to propel the locomotive, though the radiator cooling fans were hydrostatically driven through low pressure hydraulic hoses.
