My father was in charge of the filming from the camera car, the heavily modified KM. He related that there was a German technician sent with the original engines who was driven bonkers by the lack of regular maintenance. The policy here being more run it until there's a problem, rather than check at the end of each run.
When I worked at Kernforschungszentrum Karlsruhe we needed a belly board to enable us to slide into the inside of a cyclotron. It's just a slab of plywood with spool shaped rollers on the ends. We waited, and waited, and it finally arrived: beautifully veneered edges, polished brass fittings and a nice clear stained finish that brought out the grain nicely.
