I've worked with plenty of folks like this over the years, and have hundreds of bike lockers and bike racks to show for it. We used special enforcement to stem bike theft from commuter rail and transit stations (where the thieves literally showed up with bolt cutters and filled an entire truck with dozens of bikes stolen driving from from station to station in broad daylight). And, I've worked with these decent folks on things like bike safety and helmet programs, that have saved real lives. We even put bike racks on many trains.
Unfortunately, there is a new element of bike "advocate" community that has emerged over the last 15 years that is arrogant, over-amped (too much testosterone?), pushy, poorly educated (despite purported college degree's...???), intolerant, and self righteous, in the extreme. It's just another reflection of our polarized, emotion driven, intellectually deficient, and dysfunctional political discourse....where alienating folks in the name of your uncompromising "belief" system, or to pander to the most ignorant fools, is seen as a litmus test of political "purity" by self promoting ideologues seeking power.
So, in the name of sanity, we rail folks need to take the high road, and therefore we shouldn't lobby to take the bike racks out of the trains.
