Back in the mid '50's when my husband and I were students at Cal and UC DAVIS, the east coast Ivy League "preppie" styles hit the college campuses across the country and we were wearing khaki pants (and skirts) and microplaid shirts with button down collars and charcoal gray flannel pants and bermuda shorts and PINK button down collar shirts---males and females alike. There was never any reference in those days to what we now refer to as the gay community. Pink was totally acceptable.
