I would not use the words "corrupt monopolistic efforts of National City Lines." Key System tracks were totally worn out except for those on the Bay Bridge. Plans were made for Key System trains to operate across the bridge to a large bus terminal at the east end of the bridge. The state wanted the tracks off the Bay Bridge so the space could be used by motor vehicles. In this way the state delayed having to build another Bay crossing.
The underlying cause was the same reason privately owned transit systems disappeared almost everywhere in the United States. Politicians would not set fares high enough for a private company to get any return on its investment. Key System was in bankruptcy several times during its life because of failure to earn enough money to pay for construction and operation.
