This book is essential to read for anyone who wants
to understand the conflicts between railroads and the
highways, and why there has been and is so much support
for roads and so little for rail.
This has everything to do with the demise of the Key System.
Goddard does an excellent job of detailing the facts that show
why roads supplanted rail here in the US. He writes clearly and
uses many, many footnotes to support his statements. The subject
is quite complex, and cannot be reduced to a short post here. One of
Goddard's many points is that road interests got in bed with the federal
government in a way that would have gotten railroads in serious trouble,
had the railroads tried to do the same thing.
