Western Railway museum acquired almost all of the Boeing Vertol spare parts including circuit boards from Muni. These cars are almost completely controlled by their circuit boards. The original Muni plan was to replace a defective circuit board when needed and send the original board to the factory for repair.
Unfortunately these circuit boards use many obsolete semi-conductors that are no longer available. The special test jigs used to repair them no longer exist. Electronic components including semi-conductors do have a limited shelf life. Many components on the Muni circuit boards are beyond their normal shelf life.
To trouble shoot and repair these circuit boards down to the component level would require a very experienced electronic technician. Few railway museums have volunteers with this kind of knowledge. Perhaps someone can install old K-type controllers and motor resistors to keep the Boeing Vertol cars running in museums.
