The occupation of "journalist" is not a profession, hence you see the occurrence of errors with little or no accountability. If it were a profession, such as engineers or physicians, they would be licensed. They would be responsible to the public not to commit errors, under threat of loss of the license. In the engineering profession, there is a practice of "peer review" to assure accuracy and completeness, when the health and safety of the public is involved. Imagine this applied to journalism, and the picture changes dramatically. Licensed reporters, responsible for accuracy and completeness... not a bad idea, especially when you think about the vast influence they have on our society.
