In Waldie's defense, you will notice that he is a transit user. He says he has not been able to drive during most of his adult life. When he talks of the downtrodden transit user he is refering to himself, amoung others. He is one of the driven. Also, his piece was editorial comment, not reporting. Maybe the buses he rides are overcrowded with the worst and best of passengers and employees.
