Actually the full bore tunnel section of the 710 would only be 4.5 miles. With probably another mile of "new cover in Pasadena, over the current stub, which could be developed and made into park space, in now high density Old Pasadena. Once more, the 710 tunnel could entirely be paid for with congestion based tolls, and built at full "risk" though a private franchise, at no coat to the taxpayer.

The 710 would be an environmental and traffic congestion relief "two fer". As the average trip using the proposed 710 tunnel would save over 20 miles between the areas north and areas in south LA County and Orange County, which represents about 20% of the trips now having to go on the I-210 between this "missing link" and a full twenty extra miles via the I-605. This would save about a "gallon" each way in my truck and about half of that in a Prius, or about 22 pounds of CO2 each way for my truck and 11 pounds of CO2 every trip in a Prius.

The sins of our past have made us feel guilty though, and the "evil" car is to blame.......yet, I have noticedthe whacks that oppose this project won't even take transit from South Pasadena to the MTA.....even though the Gold Line actually faster and cheaper than parking at MTA? So much for building more "rail" to relieve this congestion, although which these folks definitely want others to use it. Go figure?

The once very worthy cause of "saving" historic South Pasadena from the very real devastation that would have been caused by the surface route long ago morphed into a "movement"........based on our guilt about pollution, congestion, and sprawl. And, this badly needed "missing Link" project was doomed to luddite emotions run amok, abetted by foolish ignorant politicians willing to pander to any mob.....

And, no amount of real math, be it economics or environmental science, will save this worthy project from this angry mob......

Twelve billion for the 35 miles under and through the San Gabriel Mountains from the end of the 118 to Palmdale sounds very reasonable....I say give to Max's team. PB can't possibly do it for that much, under "the more work you generate", "the more work you get paid to manage" model, currently popular in CA..... I am reviewing the Burbank Santa Clarita proposals from CHSRA this week, so that ought to be fun.
