. . . and the Class 1's have some limited operations into Canada.
One of the challenges of transcontinental mergers is the inevitable challenge that they will cut competetition across the east/west divide. Today, BNSF and UP both have cooperative arrangements with both CSX and NS. Should a west and east carrier merge, they would be faced with making a lot of concessions to allow the carrier(s) that are "odd man out" to participate in their territory. Exampls include Conrail Shared Assets and BNSF rights across the former DRGW and WP/SP overland route. For now, NS has chosen to enter into financial agreements with connecting railroads. The Meridian Speedway provides a quick link between Atlanta/Birmingham and DFW/west and the recently-announced Patriot Corridor will get them into the Boston area.
