Wasn't the UP proposing or entertaining a study to electrify. If I remember correctly, they even had a test catenary energized out in Wyoming somewhere in the 70's. Anyone remember anything about this?
Ahhhh....The Milwaukee in 1917....three states...hydroelectric power fed the overhead. The juice flowed to power the trains andwhat was not used was sold back to the power companies.Regenerative braking slowed the trains going down grade power being fed back into the wire and used to pull a trainup the other side. HOW ENERGY EFFICIANT!!
Late 1800's to mid 1900's this country had the one of the finest systems of electric railways in the world. They were heavy and light rail systems both rural and citywide. A lot of these systems were powered by local hydrro-electric power from local H-E dams on rivers and streams all across this once great country.
