Especially since Mariposa county didn't even have a lumber mill!! Very true comment on linear vs
board feet. When we do failure analysis, velocity improvement, conveyor integrations, we don't
really care how wide the board is but rather how fast we need to move the piece. When we did the
debarker conversion it was a matter of how fast we could swallow a log up to the 35" diameter
limit. You horsepower for the largest piece and go from there. But, despite all that the mill
still would do about 300,000 board feet per day pretty consistently. The redwood mill at Orick
would some days do 100,000 BF because they were cutting oddball sizes though looking nowhere as
busy. Mendocino Forest Products became a stud mill and cut 2X4's, 2X6's and a few 2X8's as did
the mill in Weaverville. That stuff trucks a lot easier and kinda obviates the need for the
railroad.
