On head hardened rail I can hear nickels and quarters when I've run over them. If a coin or woodchip gets stuck to the head of the rail, you can hear it (standing next to the tracks, not in the cab) when the wheels run over that spot, even though you can run your hand over the head at that point and not feel it.
