The drive over Donner in winter can be slow, nasty and dangerous.
The drive to Las Vegas from LA is slow, nasty, then once over Cajon, extremely fast, and dangerous.
But the time it takes beats the hell out of the RR- get there earlier and stay later.

And thanks very much for the folks who pointed me to answers.
