Heavy train on grade

This interesting exchange reminded me of a good Steve Lee story...........when he was a road foreman out of Cheyenne he did field tests of engineers. One his favorites was to announce to the engineer he was riding with that he would be bringing his 10,000+ ton soda ash train down Sherman Hill without the benefit of dynamic brakes. Then part way down the hill, with a healthy set on the automatic, Steve would reach over and kick the brake valve into running and ask "now what are you going to do?" My thoughts would be to jump......
