I seem to recall that Rio Grande once ran freight over the Rockies with 4-axle power, in competition with UP when they were moving to mostly-6 (with the occasional DD spliced in) for long drags. Difference was that D&RG used enough units to have plenty of powered axles, and SHORT FAST TRAINS to stay within their tonnage limits on the grades and in the mountain weather. IOW it was service designed by actual railroaders.
BNSF isn't the only one rebuilding old GE 4400's to C4 specs. Understand NS is doing it too. Everybody else is staying away from the concept in droves (both the new and the rebuilds). So does that mean, when the final round of mergers happens sometime during Mr. Trump's term(s), that BNSF will pick up NS while UP will get CSX? Leaving KCS exactly where?
