The D&RGW used aux water tanks because their turntables were too small! New engines were delivered that were too long to be turned on the existing tables. Until the new longer turntables were installed, they hauled old oil tankers behind the steamers to make one large virtual tender. The now surplus old turntables trickled down to other smaller engine facilities.
