Well, with 80 miles worth of tunnels (the longest being the 47 mile Salmon River Breaks tunnel) electrification does seem to be in order. However, the folks at Invent Help have come up with a hybrid steam/electric locomotive design that incorporates traction motors and pantographs so that the steam engines can operate deep within the rugged Idaho mountains. The superheated steam will be generated by an onboard microwave oven which draws it's power from either overhead wires or an array of microturbines, although word has it that the folks at the Idaho National Engineering Laboratory have designed a small nuclear reactor that will fit on a Centenial frame. It is claimed such engines can not only create steam but also pop popcorn for the engine crew.
