That answer is complete bull$#it, they had just changed ends, started back down the hill, and had only 66 seconds to react, in tunnels and the dark. The speed gain indicated that they were in full power going through those tunnels, and did not react in time to correct.
This third hand speculative line of crap that they were "all" probably "asleep" only 66 seconds after starting back down the hill is pure revisionist bs. And, those of us who actually worked on the early U-33's were very made very familiar with the problem, through the weeks of training following this disaster. All future U-33's came with a new control set up to aviod this problem.
This has been a topic of previous AP posts, and most of those posting on AP who actually worked on those early U-33'S, know exactly how that could happen.
