IIRC before SP went to Pullman for the 'new' daylight equipment they reviewed a proposal from and Italian firm that proposed a multi-car DMU to run the coast in about 8 1/2 hours.
I remember reading it in either a 'trains and travel' article or it may have been in the volume 1 daylight reference. In any case they determined that in the depression they would modernize the train using light weight American built equipment cars using a shorter wheelbase to allow for faster speeds on the curves.
