Re: OROVILLE DAM -- On verge of Bursting ??

Living in Yuba City directly below Oroville on the Feather R. I have been watching this develop with rather keen eyes. From my point of view the state Dept. of Water Resources totally mismanaged this situation. They sat on their hands and didn't make any kind of significant releases the entire month of January. Some specific data for instance. On January 15 there were 150,000 cubic feet per second flowing into Oroville and they were releasing 1,200 cfs. Plain stupidity since we were not even half way through the rain season and the lake was approaching 75% full. The rest of January it continued to fill and they did nothing significant until February and the lake was above 80% and that was when they let out 70,000 cfs and the spill way blew. Currently they are releasing 65,000 cfs but there is still over 100,000 cfs coming in. The top undamaged part of the spillway appears to be holding ok. The bottom part is history. At one point yesterday there was 190,000 cfs. inflow. That's enough to fill two Olympic pools in one second! We're talking lots of water. It appears the lake will fill to just shy of the top of the emergency spillway, possibly tomorrow. It has never gone over the emergency spillway ever, but in 1997 the last time it flooded on the Feather R. below Marysville it got to 1 ft. from the top. This all could have been avoided but DWR seems to put water contracts for San Joaquin farmers ahead of flood control and the safety of nearly 150,000 of us who live below the dam and depend on them to make good decisions when it comes to flood control. Heads should roll at the DWR but nothing will happen as there is no accountability. The last time the levee broke here in Yuba City, in 1955 there was 5' of water where I live. I am in the process of moving my entire photographic collection to higher ground along with other valuables. There is still a lot of rainy season to go and I don't trust the idiots who are in charge at DWR. Dick Dorn
