...if there were a hole in the dam, it would take only moments for it to be much bigger than 30 feet and for the lake level to drop precipitously. The hole is in the spillway lining, and is in fact bigger than 30' now that they run more water over it, but it's not in the dam.

I'm disappointed in Reuters - they usually seem to be more reliable than most big US news organizations. But faux news (or even just errors and omissions) can come from anywhere so don't rely on a single source...
