The NP CW branch line ran from the main line at Connell through Warden, crossed over the GN at Adrian and continued on to Cheney where it connected with the main line again. From Connell to Cheney it was roughly parallel to and north of the main line through Ritzville and I suppose it could have been used as a detour route if needed. I'm pretty sure there was a connection between the NP branch and the GN main at Adrian. The fills and trestle pilings are still visible and there is a small storage yard at Adrian. I recall reading a story that the EB GN Empire Builder was detoured from Adrian to Spokane via Cheney once due to a derailment on the GN.
I don't have an exact date for the abandonment of the central portion of the branch but it was after the BN merger made it redundant. The Southern (Western) portion is now the Columbia Basin RR and the Northern (Eastern) portion is now the PCC.
