Current hours of service requirements to "reset" the clock for a day off (simplified):
5 days on = minimum 24 hours off
6 days on = 48 hours off
7 days on = 48 hours off (you can only work a seventh day to get home from an away terminal)
Minimum 10 hours uninterrupted hours off between shifts.
Monthly hours in all railroad service must not exceed 276 hours (which is hard but not impossible to do).
Some shortlines received an exemption to work six days on with one day off. Some restrictions apply like a regular job mostly daylights, and still not exceed 276 hours per month.
This is actually a law, written by Congress, as interpreted by the FRA. There can be additional restrictions by union agreement.
Under hours of service - once you have worked 5-7 days you will get 24-48 hours off. But if you happen to unexpectedly get 24 hours, then the clock resets and you can work 5-7 days again whether you planned on it or not.
