The "Spirit of California" and Hours of Service/Crew change point

The Spirit of California was a short-lived overnight train operated between Los Angeles, the San Francisco Bay Area (San Jose/Oakland), and Sacramento in the early 1980s. Its scheduled running time was between 12:45 and 13 hours each way.
My question: with 12-hour HOS rules, how was this handled? Did the crews change in Oakland? If an Oakland crew took the train up from Oakland to Sacramento in the morning, would they get a hotel room for the day and then bring it back to Oakland that evening? Some other arrangement?
Just curious. Thanks in advance.
