One place we "Dutched Em" was at San Ardo during beet season. Going east you would stop back far enough to hold the cut to be picked up off the house track. You would go in, knock them loose and start them west. Then duck out as described and go up the main. The loads would roll out against the train, we would couple up and head the train east.
If we had cut off, then went up to the east end, backed down the house and shoved them to a joint, then hauled the mtys back up to spot and then out and back down to the train, it would cost us 30 to 40" more and maybe a meet or two with west-bounds down the line.
