I remember a drop that went wrong. It was on the Sacramento Northern in Pittsburgh. The crew had finished their setouts and now had to get their caboose around the locomotive. Their locomotive cleared the switch, the switch was thrown, and the caboose stopped over the switch leaving the locomotive stranded on a dead end spur. Both locomotive and caboose were equipped with push poll sockets but neither carried a push poll as they were no longer permitted. The crew scoured the area and found a piece of scrap wood which they used as a push poll. Fortunately all went well and they left with the caboose trailing, not leading the locomotive.
