As for that "house" at Millbrae, was it possibly a former "section house", but was retained so that the switch crews had somewhere to hang out during the commute curfew?
The oddest commute train I saw back in the day (late 1970s) was when a cab forward (SW1500) arrived at Hillsdale dragging a dead/ailing SDP45 and a bunch of Subs during the PM commute. Surprisingly, that Crud really didn't seem to be having any issues with that load! I guess it was a matter of do whatever you need to, just keep the trains moving.
