Barry is right about the bike path. Rights of way are next to impossible to obtain and this one should not be encumbered. The bike enthusiasts are a very effective lobby, much more successful than transit advocates, and can put the touch on the highway crowd for space for bike lanes. America devotes a lot of space to highways and streets and these take the bicyclists right where they want to go anyway. Once a bike lane is put in it would be next to impossible politically to take it back. Making single track a permanent limitation is a dumb move.
