There were two tunnels. LAP tunnel #1 extended parallel to Hill Street between First and Temple. LAP tunnel #2 extended from Temple (and Hill St) to Sunset Boulevard. Los Angeles cut a second auto tunnel parallel to Tunnel #1 around 1919. Tunnel #2 was severed for the downtown slot of the Hollywood Freeway. A portion of tunnel #2 north of the freeway was retained by Los Angeles Board of Education for underground storage of records. As I recall the two tunnels were opened on September 9th 1909 with a celebration called “Tunnel Day.” For several years after Tunnel Day was celebrated as a reason to get drunk. I photographed all this stuff during the late 1940s and early 50s. The present day Catholic Cathedral parking garage is on the site of Tunnel #2 south portal.
