Erik, you just lost your A. This is because in the real world, the "evil" gubmint can and often does need to provide services. This actually has happened quite often in modern history, when the often far from "ideal" free market model fails, in the real world of imperfect markets and/or imperfect market competition. This is because under many circumstance the market cannot produce those public goods and/or services at a profit, often due to the inability to charge efficiently for externalities, or due to natural monopolies, or where there are economies of scale, or where it requires social consent, to achieve the societal efficiencies desired. .
Public goods, with shared benefits, in excess of costs, that clearly benefit society are recognized as important exceptions, to otherwise generally sound free market principles, where there are in fact, free and competitive markets. This is true going all of the way back to Adam Smith in the Wealth of Nations. Which is why we often use the "gubmint" to choose "winners" when we produce much needed common goods liked roads, bridges, railways, and works such as lighthouses, where the common benefits are more efficiently delivered by a non-profit oriented "public" sector, and the costs are more efficiently offset by taxing the beneficiaries, than through the often unequal and/or uncompetitive use of marginal cost pricing.
I am aware that today, many so-called or self styled "capitalist" wannabee's are more enamored of the more primitive and simplistic libertarian cult of Ayn Rand. That cult would not want you to become contaminated by reading more complex and nuanced observations of economic behavior or interactions by real economists like, Smith, Mill, or Lord Marshall. This is because you might begin to understand some of that math they use, which would likely open your mind and begin to teach you how to use this important tool of complex economic analysis, which might then cause you to become permanently immune to much of the simplistic dogmatic twaddle which is being peddled by the"true believers" on the extreme right and the extreme left.
Anton, you are just another trolling douchebag. Amtrak isn't really your issue, is it?
