According to Google Maps driving (trip) calculator:

Lisbon, Portugal to Warsaw, Poland - 2061 mi.
San Francisco to Chicago - 2132 mi.

A difference of 71 miles. Perhaps this will give you a little perspective of how big Western Europe actually is.
