Not only are many ties being replaced but the steel ties in the Yuba Gap area are being replaced with wood ties. It seems that the steel ties do not maintain track gauge and / or track stability in mountain territory.
A man strolled by and said that the second mainline will be re-installed between Switch Nine and Shed Ten. He said that Union Pacific had gotten money from the state of California for the job. He sighted examples for the project. He pointed to the two ribbon rails laid out along BOTH flanks of the current single track and multiple stacks of track materials to the east of the tunnels at Yuba Gap. Well, the ribbon rail is to replace the rail on the current existing track AND the track materials set out are being used in the tie change process.
ANYONE HAVE any other input on this re-surfaced rumor of double track through Yuba Gap again ? ? ?
