That better cooling was also much better for the desert, too. I went back to reset low water and low oil buttons much less, in fact I can't recall that happening, once with any of the tunnel motors. I can't say that for the GE's 6700's, the ones they used on the ore and beet swing helpers, or the uncomfortable 8600's, or some of the earlier EMD's like the geep 9's we'd use on the two unit helpers out of old Colton. These would seem to always crap out going up the hill from low water or low oil, at about Hugo, usually in a filthy dust storm, back when I was firing those jobs...

The tunnel motors were among the best big road engines I've ever had the pleasure to run, reliable, roomy, comfortable, good control panel layout, good adhesion when starting, very good at very low speeds, not prone to slippage, great dynamics for the most part, with good range, and even on a very rare occasion, in the later models, an air conditioner that actually worked.
