When the pulp mills opened both Simpson and LP maintained sawmills on the old Hammond property and Mutual Plywood operation. There was a gypo at Manila and R.H. Emerson & Son so there was a fair amount of lumber traffic off the Samoa Branch into the 1970's. I can't say the pulp mill traffic was anything more than incoming machinery and parts. Pulp and chips left by ships.

I think Simpson maintained their sawmill at Mutual Plywood through the 1980's giving Eureka Southern a few cars a week in addition to Sierra Pacific at Manila. When Simpson sold out to Evergreen Pulp (a Chinese Company) everything scaled down and changed. Sierra Pacific became the only customer. In 2008 or so, the pulp market collapsed and Evergreen quietly shut down and left, leaving Humboldt County holding the sack with a pulp mill full of chemicals.
