The immediate removal is just the tail of the wye in CdA, which involved two spurs into the recently-abandoned mill site next to North Idaho College. Next they'll pull up BNSF (mix of ex-GN and MILW) track from CdA west to almost Huetter, about four miles, plus the remaining mile and a half or so of UP track in CdA that BNSF had been using to service a third dock at the mill. Most of this track is along the Spokane River and would be considered by many as scenic (though not as breathtaking as other rail/river routes in the area), but that scenic quality has attracted new condo and business development along the river's north bank, where the track lies. Huetter has short sidings allowing the local to run around its cars before heading back west and switching industries on its way off the branch. If they install a new runaround in Post Falls as the crew mentioned, or added a third leg at the Potlatch mill in Post Falls to form a wye, they'll no longer need to run east to Huetter and back, and can chop off another two or three miles of track. I realize that to most folks this loss of a few miles of branch line to to some small city in Idaho seems trivial. One can only appreciate it if they saw the street running to the east side of CdA that ended 20 years ago, or saw photos of the GN interurbans that used to transfer passengers directly across the dock with steamboats, or knew how many mills used to churn out lumber traffic in this town. Makes places like St. Maries all that more important now to the history-minded railfan.
