Junkies have been around for a long time but mostly years back amongst musicians and hardcore bohemians like William Burroughs. There was no Rust Belt in the forties and fifties.
It is hard to cope with what is big money for street thugs. Charlie Parker said something like it is a lot easier to get heroin in the 'hood any time of day or nite than essentials like groceries. I tried to track down the exact quote but to no avail.
