The SMART train doesn't "do" anything. It simply
takes too few riders to make much difference to anything
or anyone.
Maybe Capdiamont doesn't know the stats. In 20 years
after even more growth, it'll only take 5-6,000 riders
a day. Currently, there are over 1 million cars
using the 101 freeway between Cloverdale and Larkspur.
And of those 5-6,000 riders, we still don't know how
many of them are coming from buses, rather than cars.
(The net impact on auto use is even smaller than the ridership.)
It's just a lot of money for very little. Trains are
worthwhile investments in many locations. But not every
location. That's the point. It's not ideological. It's
not pro highway or anti-rail. And if getting cars off
the road is the goal, then expanding ggt services
will do it at lower cost. $1.4 billion buys a lot
of buses, routes, and lower fares. And we could
do that now, not wait for six years, while SMART
collects sales taxes with no services.
