Foamers,

Grow up. Twenty six lives, 135 very serious injuries, and two or three hundred million in ultimate damages are real. So enough of the whining. This guy screwed up and the operating regime we are operating in lacks sufficient redundancy.

We will need to nearly double the amount of passenger movements in an around major urban centers in the next ten years, in California alone. to keep up with passenger demand. This will be done in a mixed operating environment where freight volume will increase by as much as one third. We need to invest in new safety regimes to accomplish this mission.

As a rail/transportation professional who loves my work, I can state that reform is long over in our safery requirements. Our technological advances have not been applied to railroad safety and now will be. This will allow us to reduce the risk of such human failures by about a thousand fold. This technology is ready and will pay for itself within three years in increased operational safety, reliability, and track capacity. So now we are going to do it.

Some of you will go out today and be text message while driving. Some of you will drive drunk or loaded. Some may choose to continure to act irresponsibly is safety sensitive jobs. But, don't try to make excuses for it. If, as these facts indicate, this individual was texting, he was doing something that has been measured to be at least 50% more dangerous than operating that locomotive while drunk. So enough excuses from the foamers, about this individual and this incident, because I'm sick of hearing them. And, I'm really tired of hearing how we Americans are somehow too corrupt or incompetent to do something intelligent about it.
