Sacramento has a quiet zone on the old WP line through midtown and South Sac. South of R Street, it has parallel light rail tracks sharing crossings. It's ALL quiet zone (trains including light rail use bells and that's it).
Surprisingly, there have been few grade crossing wrecks in the area with UP since the zone went in. Several major ones with light rail, which tends to run faster than UP and more often, and of course opposite directions on 2 tracks.
Most recent collision was somebody backing out of a parking space in a lot next to the tracks as a stack train went by. Apparently no fence there, and they backed into the moving train as it went by. Tore up the back of the car, but just scraped paint on a couple of stack cars. Horrors! Must stop the trains! Must have a trench! (Must not spend any public money to do it!) Ha! (Must refer people who back without using mirrors, backup camera, or even turning around and looking, to reeducation before reacquiring a suspended d/l - my thought.) There *are* fences along the r/w between streets in several parts of midtown; I suspect another one will go up at the spot where this collision happened, and if UP wants to be mean it'll be the cheapest-looking rusty chain link they can find in the supply warehouse (no fancy ironwork!).
