There is quite a bit of battery research being done these days to eliminate the organic liquids in lithium ion batteries. There is no metallic lithium in a lithium ion battery. It is the organics that can catch fire.

The most expensive part of a lithium ion battery is the cobalt. Lots of work is being done to also find substitutes for that. A Tesla only has about $200 of lithium in its battery.

Batteries are improving 5% to 10% per year. It adds up.

Car manufacturers are assuming that most customers will choose electric cars over ICE powered ones withing ten years. Of course they will still make ICE powered cars for those who still want them.
